Thaamaan Thonrikkon The Leader of the Mullaiththinai People

Dr.S.Kanmani Ganesan

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to decipher the clan and the living place of Thaamaan Thonrikkon; the hero of the hymn Puranaanooru- 399. Puranaanooru is a treasure bearing the social history of the early Tamils. It’s true; the compilers of the anthology, the first publisher Dr.U.Ve.Saaminaathaiyar and the commentators after him had done a wonderful job. But there are still lots of unfolded pages which should be studied to reveal the truths and forgotten history. The compilation procedure of the specific anthology reveals the lovable attitude of the Tamil people towards the triumvirs; the Cheras, the Cholas and the Pandyas of Tamil Nadu. As a result they have failed to bring out the adorable heroes among the thinaimaanthar. Besides, the area to which the hero belongs was not finalised by anybody. It would be fair on our part if we are able to derive the landscape in which the hero practiced his leadership and finalise the clan to which he belongs. The etymology of the full name of the hero itself serves as the source to pinpoint his clan. The residential township of the poet who sang his name and fame also serves as the primary source to identify the hero’s country. Google maps help us to carry out this task in a successful manner. The vegetation of the landscape serves as the secondary source. The researches of 20th century scholars serve as the tertiary source. We are able to finalise Thaamaan Thonrikkon’s landscape at the foothills of the Kodaikanal mountains near Beijam Lake and identify him as the leader of mullaiththinai people.

Mr.S.Kulandhaivel

Abstract

The ideas of “Thirukkural” have been accepted everywhere in the world for they are common one for the entire human race. “Thirukkural” is written in couplets and in each of them a particular message about an aspect of life begins and ends. The meaning of the couplets have been analyzed and explained in detailed ways by many Tamil veteran scholars. The important point of this article is that the idea of every couplet implies the divine source of source which is the center of that idea. This fact about the couplets in “Thirukkural” becomes an example for Derrida’s concept of center which can be anywhere in the text or even somewhere out of text in his ‘Structure, Sign, and Play”.
